Balancing your role as a parent with that as a student and often a job is physically and emotionally exhausting.  There are many resources on campus and in the community to support you as a parent.

Parenting related Listservs - 255-5298
The Office of Workforce Diversity, Equity, and Life Quality has a number of e-lists/listservs for Cornell community members to join, including parents-L, adoption-L, specialneeds-L, lactation-L, school-closing-L, and many more.  Please visit the link to learn more about these e-lists and join.  The parents-L list provides members with a bi-weekly newsletter of family related activities and resources at Cornell and in the community.  Members are encouraged to use the list in an interactive manner. 

Cornell Family Helper List - 255-1917
The Cornell University Family Helper List is a directory of Cornell students and community members that are interested in being hired for performing the following services: babysitting, pet/house sitting, tutoring, sports lessons, elder caregiving, and more.  Cornell does not endorse these individuals and recommends that you properly screen these individuals for the services you need performed.

Community Resources

Franziska Racker Centers - 272-5891, info@rackercenters.org
Helps those with special needs and their families have good lives, with opportunities to learn, to be responsible, to feel cared for, to share, to be connected with others.  Services include: preschool special education, child care, early intervention services, family support, and respite care.

Family and Children’s Services - 273-7494
Family & Children's Service of Ithaca is the primary private non-profit provider of mental health services in Tompkins County for children, adolescents, adults, seniors, and families. They provide services to all persons without bias of race, gender, age, income or education level, sexual orientation, or religion. Fees for service are reimbursable through Medicaid, Medicare, and private health insurance. They are able to base the personal fee for our services on a flexible scale according to household income.

Family Reading Partnership - 277-8602
The Family Reading Partnership is a non-profit community organization that promotes early literacy.

Day Care and Child Development Council: Child and Family Development Program - 273-0259
Helps parents to recognize their strengths and respect their role as a child's first teacher.  Visits families in their homes to answer questions about infant care. Provides child development information and appropriate expectations and listen to parents' concerns and guide families in developing their parenting skills.
Tompkins County Health Department: Assistance with Special Needs - 274-6644
Child Find is the primary referral source to the Early Intervention Program for children ages birth up to age three. Through Child Find, children who are suspected or at risk for developmental delay or disability are monitored and screened. The Child Find-Early Intervention staff works closely with your child's primary care provider to monitor your child's developmental progress. If a potentially qualifying disability or delay is identified, your child will be referred to the Early Intervention Program for evaluation.

Babies First - 273-7521
A child with no crib, no diapers, no warm clothing, no safe car seat, no toys, no formula. These are a few of the problems addressed by Babies First, a church based program in Ithaca. They take referrals for families with children in need from local non-profit agencies, and try to help ensure that the basic needs of all children in our community are met.

YMCA - 257-0101
Services include swim and sports lessons, exercise equipment, and child care/summer camp programs.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program - 273-8364
Establishes and nurtures friendships between caring, responsible adults and children with special need for such friendship
